Abstract
In this study three different PHAs have been modified with a peroxide, a dianhydride and an epoxy-based chemical to study their effect on the rheology and
ultimately the foamability of the PHAs. With the peroxide chain scission and reconnection to cross-linked structures was observed leading to a highly increased capability to be expanded in a batch foaming process whereas the dianhydride and epoxy-based modifiers did not exhibit any positive impact on the foamability of the PHAs. Within the
three polymers studied PHBH took an outstanding position by reaching expansion ratios of 25 when being modified with the peroxide.
