Title

MUHI - A Multi-Use Haptic Interface that enables Haptic Interactive Distractors for Redirected Walking

Abstract
In this work, we propose a solution featuring a multi-use passive haptic interface (MUHI) for interactive distractors, designed to make resets in redirected walking (RDW) applications more engaging and less noticeable.By its design MUHI can be reused throughout the experience and is able to convincingly simulate different tools: It has multiple handles, which are only selectively represented in the virtual counterparts. This creates a unique haptic and visual experience for each virtual object. Making use of the RDW-related drift between the physical and virtual environment adds to the persuasiveness of the tool, since MUHI can be placed and retrieved at different virtual locations, while staying stationary in the physical world.
