Topology Comparison to Generate Output Currents of Specific Shape

Abstract
The efficient operation of power converters largely depends on the accurate testing and characterization of each component used in the circuits. The inductor is one of the most critical components as, in general, it is connected in series and largely impacts the output characteristics if coupled with the load or input side, typically used in current source converters. While operational, inductors are stressed by a wide range of current waveforms, depending on the type of specific converter topologies being used. This paper attempts to determine power converter topologies that are capable of generating varied waveforms with controlled amplitude, frequency, ripple, and duty cycle, namely sinusoidal, square and triangular, to be stressed on an inductor. In order to accomplish this goal, an extensive examination of power converter topologies is carried out, with a particular focus on important variables like component cost, control abilities, and efficiency.
