Detection of Topological Artifacts using Partial Mapping
Abstract
Shape-Matching or Shape-Correspondence is used heavily in computer graphics and geometry processing, especially in tasks related to rendering and animation. Nevertheless, three-dimensional shapes acquired in the real world harbor specific properties and characteristics that lead to inaccuracies, which can hinder computing well-established matches between shapes. One of these properties is topological artifacts. Knowing where these topological artifacts are can assist and improve the finding of well-established correspondences between three-dimensional shapes. In this thesis, I present an approach to detect such topological artifacts from three-dimensional shapes employing a shapematching method called Partial Mapping. This approach can be applied to any triangle mesh and is fully automatic, as it does not need any external help or hints about where the topological noise areas are. When the preconditions are met, the algorithm can find the correct topological noise areas of the shapes.
