Dekarbonisierung der industriellen Produktion (DekarbInd) - Teilbericht 2: Erarbeitung von Eckpunkten für die Dekarbonisierung der Stahlindustrie

Die vollständige Dekarbonisierung der deutschen Industrie ist eine Mammutaufgabe, die grundlegende Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft hat und nur unter Einbindung aller ⁠Stakeholder⁠ erfolgreich werden kann. Das Projekt "DekarbInd" hat in verschiedenen Workshops mit diesen Stakeholdern gemeinsam Lösungen erarbeitet.
Teilbericht 2: Die Stahlindustrie ist für ca. 20 % der industriellen Emissionen und damit für etwa 5 % der gesamten deutschen Emissionen verantwortlich. Im Rahmen des Teilprojekts wurden Eckpunkte für eine Roadmap zur Dekarbonisierung der Stahlindustrie herausgearbeitet. Stakeholder wie Stahlhersteller, Anlagenbauer, Banken, NGOs und Wissenschaft wurden auf partizipative Weise einbezogen. Zentrale Aspekte sind die Umstellung auf Direktreduktion mit grünem Wasserstoff, die Erhöhung des Schrotteinsatzes und die Dekarbonisierung der Elektrostahlproduktion.

The Paris Climate Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times. For this, Germany has the goal of becoming greenhouse gas neutral by 2045. To achieve this, emissions in all sectors must be drastically reduced. In the area of industrial emissions, the steel industry is particularly in focus, as it is responsible for 20 % of emissions here and thus for about 5 % of total German emissions. This is where the DekarbInd project comes in. Within the scope of the two-and-a-half-year project, key steps for a roadmap aimed to decarbonise the steel industry were drafted. Stakeholders such as steel producers, plant manufacturers, but also societal groups and the scientific community were involved in a participatory way. They participated in workshops on different topics and commented on thesis papers and thus contributed their expertise to the project. This final report offers insights into barriers on the way to decarbonisation of steel production and identifies next steps and measures that can help to overcome the barriers and steer the steel industry further towards decarbonisation. Key issues are the switch to direct reduction of iron ore with green hydrogen, increasing the use of scrap and decarbonising electric steel production.
