Adapting and enhancing V2X communication to agricultural machinery to address road safety via C-ITS

Abstract
Agricultural machinery is occasionally encountered on roads, and although accidents involving them are infrequent, they tend to result in severe consequences for those involved. To mitigate such risks, the adoption of Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) offers a radio-based system for exchanging intentions among road users, thereby preventing or providing warnings about hazardous traffic situations, so called Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technology.
In pursuit of the Vision Zero objective, which aims to eliminate fatalities from accidents, the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) and the LANDNETZ project have collaborated. AEF focuses on developing a solution that is not tied to a specific brand, addressing immediate use cases like broken-down vehicle warnings. On the other hand, LANDNETZ conducts research on future use cases specific to agricultural machinery. This paper demonstrates how these objectives can be realized.
