Title
Spray drying of energetic materials at the example of Octogen
Abstract
Particle properties such as size, morphology and purity are important for propellant, explosive, and pyrotechnic formulations. The focus of this work was to produce high energy explosives particles with these properties. The spray drying method was used to prepare 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) particles.
Particle size analysis showed that HMX particles in a size range from 0.4 µm to 15 µm can be produced with the spray drying equipment available at Fraunhofer ICT. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images also showed that it is possible to produce spherical particles. Furthermore, the spray-dried particles were investigated crystallographically. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that the HMX particles consist of the β-HMX.
