Titel
Disintegration behavior of polymer compounds used in biodegradable mulch films
Abstract
Plastic mulch films are widely used in agriculture and their application comes with a variety of advantages like increased soil temperature, retention of soil moisture and reduced weed pressure. Most mulch films are made from poly(ethylene) (PE) which is persistent in soil when not being properly removed from the fields. To combat the threat of plastic pollution, biodegradable polymers were designed to be easily degraded into water and carbon dioxide by microorganisms. Because of the relevance of biodegradable mulch films, this work focused on the soil disintegration behavior of three biodegradable polymers that can be processed into a mulch film compound. Therefore, film like samples of poly(butylene-sebacate-co-terephthalate) (PBST), poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHA) were incubated on the soil surface and were buried in the soil to imitate the application of a mulch film and after being tilled into the soil after use. The incubation for 16 weeks at 23 °C and 50 % air humidity was conducted with regular topsoil and a mix of topsoil and agricultural soil from a test field for biodegradability studies to mimic natural conditions. First indications of material changes were found in surface modifications of PBST that were observed with light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as changes in the mechanical properties measured by a tension test. Thermal properties measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and functional groups measured by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) remained almost constant in all samples under all conditions. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) revealed a decrease in the molecular weight only in samples made from PHA. Comparing the polymers for the application in a biodegradable mulch film compound, a high percentage of PBST would make the material suitable for a short-term application due to the quick fragmentation. PBAT has shown slower degradation than PBST in this study. However, due to the acceleration of degradation by ultraviolet radiation reported in literature, the material may be equally suitable for short-term application. PHA may be processed for medium-term application based on its high degree of stability. The differences between surface and soil incubation were not clearly evident. In tendency, the degradation in soil seemed to be rather slower than on the surface. Further, it seemed like the influence of the agricultural soil type promoted faster material changes, although being challenging to point out clear evidence. Still, the influence of microbial communities and ultraviolet radiation is to be investigated in future studies.
