Optimisation of the operational management of wind turbines without fixed feed-in tariffs
Abstract
The increasing complexity of the requirements for the operation of wind turbines calls into question their conventional operating strategy. If remuneration is based on revenue from the electricity exchange, it makes sense to react to price fluctuations during operation. How should such responses be designed? What are the implications for the profitability of wind farm projects from an owner's perspective? By carrying out a case study, this paper evaluates deliberate connection and disconnection of turbines depending on wind conditions and electricity prices using economic criteria. The results of the case study show that it can be reasonable to shut down turbines in economically unfavourable situations. Lost low revenues in damage-intensive wind conditions are recovered by the revenues over a significantly extended lifetime of the turbines, and the rentability of the project increases considerably.
