Abstract
The constant provision of green energies is currently gaining in importance. This prioritization makes energy storage essential, bringing processes such as alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis further into focus. This is expected to combine advantages of classical alkaline electrolysis (AEL) with those of polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis (PEMEL) e. g. the possibility to use non-PGM catalyst (AEL) and offer fast reaction to load changes (PEMEL). In order to be able to use these advantages efficiently in large-scale plants, cell components and materials must be continuously improved. In this context, high-performance material combinations and structures with the highest possible chemical, thermal and mechanical stability are sought. In addition, properties such as fluid transport and gas removal, as well as low electrical contact resistance and high ionic conductivity are in the spotlight. In the work presented here, structural layer properties of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) were investigated using different material combinations and/or portions. Substrates and ionomers from different manufacturers in combination with selected catalyst materials are considered.
