Decreasing gas demand and now? - Alternative options for the utilization of the German gas distribution network

Abstract
The transition of the energy system towards a climate neutral system goes a long with a decreasing gas demand, leading to challenges especially for distribution network operators with their large number of households as network users. This paper is therefore investigating the alternative usage options of the natural gas distribution network in case it will not be needed anymore for the distribution of natural gas, biogas or synthetic methane. The alternative usage options investigated are the distribution of hydrogen, the distribution of CO 2 or the use as empty pipes for electricity or telecommunication cables. Overall, the analysis shows that the distribution of hydrogen is currently the most promising option, while further research is needed for the use of distributing CO 2 or as empty pipes for telecommunication cables, especially regarding their economic feasibility.
