Abstract
The advantages of additive manufacturing AM, for example in terms of flexibility and resource efficiency, have been widely described. However, these advantages often do not justify the comparatively low productivity associated with most of the processes.
Hybrid processes, i.e. the successive combination of tasks or the simultaneous combination of processes or energy streams in a common process zone, allow to compensate for disadvantages of individual processes and even to achieve synergetic advantages.
At the Fraunhofer ILT, a novel approach to coaxially combine wire-based laser material deposition and wire arc additive manufacturing is being developed. With this laser-arc-hybrid-AM-process, an annular laser beam can be superimposed with different arc modes, which enable higher deposition rates while simultaneously increasing precision as well as reducing the number of spatters.
In this presentation, an overview of the system technology and process design will be presented.
