Der Technologie- und Innovations-Roadmap-Prozess im Graphen-Flagship: Innovation Interface Investigation

Das Graphen-Flagship-Projekt ist eine der größten Forschungsinitiativen der EU. Ein Konsortium aus über 150 Partnern aus Industrie und Wissenschaft erkundet hier Graphen und andere neuartige 2D-Materialien und deren Anwendungen. Seit 2014 treibt das Fraunhofer ISI in diesem Kontext einen übergreifenden Roadmap-Prozess voran. Ausgehend von einer Bewertung der technologischen und Marktpotentiale für das umfassende Anwendungsportfolio hat sich der Fokus unserer Arbeit zuletzt hin zur konkreten Erkundung besonders aussichtsreicher Anwendungspfade für 2D-Materialien verschoben (sog. Fokus-Analysen) [DR21]. Der potentielle Mehrwert von Graphen kann hier zumeist nur durch eine detaillierte Analyse gesamter Wertschöpfungsketten und den darin zentralen Interaktionen zwischen den einzelnen Wertschöpfungsstufenrealisiert werden. Die dafür notwendigen Interaktionen nehmen künftige Lieferbeziehungen vorweg, die wir mit einem wertschöpfungszentrierten Roadmap-Ansatz unter Beteiligung von industriellen Schlüsselakteuren aufklären. Seit 2017 konnten wir 12 Fokus-Analysen durchführen, deren Ergebnisse sowohl dem Projekt-Konsortium als auch den beteiligten Expertinnen und Experten aus Wirtschaft und Forschung als Informationsbasis zur Strategieentwicklung dienen. Die Themen reichen dabei von Graphen als Elektrodenmaterial für Li-Ionen-Batterien in der Elektromobilität über 5G-taugliche optische Netzwerktechnologien bis hin zu neuartigen Elastomerkompositen oder neuralen Implantaten. Eine übergeordnete Roadmap aggregiert dabei unsere Rückschlüsse zum Status und den Aussichten für die Kommerzialisierung von Graphen und die Industrialisierung der Materialherstellung[DSN+21]. Aktuell stehen unter anderem das Potential von Graphen für die Wasserstoffwirtschaft (in Brennstoffzellen und Elektrolyseuren) auf der Agenda der Roadmap.

The Graphene Flagship Project is one of the EU's largest research initiatives. A consortium of over 150 partners from industry and science is exploring graphene and other novel 2D materials and their applications. Since 2014, Fraunhofer ISI has been driving forward an overarching roadmap process in this context. Starting from an evaluation of the technological and market potentials for the comprehensive application portfolio, the focus of our work has recently shifted to the concrete exploration of particularly promising application paths for 2D materials (so-called focus analyses) [DR21]. The potentially added value of graphene can mostly only be realized through a chain of nested integration steps across different sectors. The interactions required for that anticipate future supply relationships, which we elucidate with a value chain centric roadmap approach involving key industrial players. Since 2017, we have completed 12 focus analyses, the results of which serve both the project consortium and the participating experts from industry and research as an information base for strategy development. The topics range from graphene as an electrode material for lithium-ion batteries in electromobility and 5G-capable optical network technologies, to novel elastomer composites and neural implants. An overarching roadmap aggregates our conclusions on the status and prospects for the commercialization of graphene and the industrialization of material production [DSN+21]. Current topics on the roadmap agenda include the potential of graphene for a future hydrogen economy (in fuel cells and electrolysers).
