Functionally graded ceramics

Abstract
This article starts with explaining the concept of functionally graded materials (FGM) from a mechanical point of view. FGM are used to mitigate the stress concentrations that occur at the interface where two materials with strongly different stiffness (elastic moduli) meet. Processing methods, with particular attention to additive manufacturing and some applications are reviewed.
