A Fast Algorithm for Target Adaptive Waveform Design for Imaging with Experimental Validation

Abstract
In this paper we address the problem of adaptive waveform design for a cognitive radar architecture with respect to implementation issues and imaging capabilities. We begin with a review on concepts for adaptive waveform design in order to maximize the signal to noise ratio and point out some requirements and consequences for a target adaptive waveform design. One of the most important aspects to provide radar imaging and classification tasks is the compromise of signal to noise ratio improvement and the range resolution capability. A fast algorithm based on a frequency modulation is presented and validated by measurement results from a close loop software defined radar. The results show a signal to noise ratio gain while sustaining a desired range resolution.
