Robust production systems trough sensor integration
Abstract

This article describes the current developments in the use of integrated sensors to increase robustness in production systems. Based on the state of the art, the innovative technologies that enable the integration of sensor technology into the production processes are analyzed in the context of the ever-increasing requirements of industry. Based on these technologies, representative sensor-based mechatronic components are presented which are already established in production technology or are subject of current research projects. In order to demonstrate the benefit of such a component, research and development needs in terms of connectivity are analyzed first. For a prospective breaking up of the automation pyramid, the complete transparent crosslinking along the pyramid is a fundamental requirement. While numerous successes in the higher levels of the pyramid in standardization have already been reported, still numerous questions are open in the real-time level. They can only be answered in the common discourse of all partners of the value chain. In order to demonstrate the concrete benefit of the presented developments in real production environment, concrete industrial examples are discussed in the last section of the article based on the requirements of industry in the context of networked sensor integration.
