Title
Detection indentification of concealed dangerous objects an substances
Abstract
Police authorities and security providers face an increasing need for precise detection and identification of dangerous and illegal objects like weapons and explosives, which are hidden under the clothes of potential criminal offenders. A future generation of detection systems has to be harmless to human beings. They must work close to real time conditions and in stand-off manner at considerable dis-tances. One thread scenario to be recognized from safe distances could be e.g. the presence of potentially violent offenders wearing hidden arms and located in a group of non armed citizens. The implementation of new technical solutions to support effi-cient police activities in public would create a remarkable change towards a new, up-to-date police strategy and suitable tactics. Once introduced in the security scene, the more efficient security checks will provide safer work conditions for police officers, a better subjective feeling of security in public and a secured environment in social communities. Partners from different research and development institutes as well as industry part-ners, competent in their respective domains, have made a common effort in order to develop an active detection system, whose imaging component is based on electro-magnetic centimetre- and millimetre waves (microwaves). Its substance analysing component is based on spectroscopic methods like infrared spectroscopy. The NIVEGOS-system, still in a development stage, shall be also open for the adapta-tion of additional detection- and biometric methods (NIVEGOS: Nachweis und Identifi-kation verborgener gefährlicher Objekte und Substanzen, Detection and Identification of Concealed Dangerous Objects and Substances).
