Abstract
A semiconductor device, such as a semiconductor chip, or also a solid state laser diode (1), is to be accurately positioned on a substrate (2) that is located on a horizontal flat plane (28) under an optical microscope. The microscope is mounted on a carriage (11) that moves on guideways (12) until the required position is reached. The semiconductor is held at the end of an arm (7) and this can pivot about an axis (6) to move through 90 degrees. The microscope has a pair of lenses (21, 22) and a partially transmitting mirror (17) set at 45 degrees. This allows the projected image of the semiconductor to be viewed relative to the substrate.
