Nanotechnology research in Russia - an analysis of scientific publications and patent applications

Using bibliometric and patent indicators, ten years of nanotechnological scientific progress and application across the globe are analyzed. Overall nanotechnological activity is compared by world region, and by subfield. The dynamic changes in output by world regions and subfields over time, normalized to the starting year, are also determined. Relative specialization indices are used to compare the level of subfield specialization between different countries and regions. Special emphasis is placed upon Russia to determine the country's strengths and weaknesses in the various subfields, with an eye to future cooperation with the EU.
