Laser surfacing, a process analogous to weld-surfacing, is today recognized as a rapid and flexible technique for coating and repairing components of titanium, aluminum or magnesium. Wear resistance of these otherwise soft metals can be enhanced with a range of materials suitable for laser application, esp. as selective coatings in areas subject to extreme wear. An overview is given, in which strategies and procedures are examd., in terms of cost-effective repair of worn components or tools which the technique offers.
