A cross-sectional view is given relating to state and perspectives in operating and observation techniques in the field of industrial automation. The analysis is based on impressions from the INTERKAMA 95 fair in Düsseldorf. Operating and observing techniques are regarded in the main categories process control systems (subdivided into plant design, human-process communication, visualization, and automation tools) and close-to-machine operating and observing devices.
