Depth profile of a laser irradiated steel.

Surface Mössbauer measurements have been carried out on a commercial Ck 45 mild steel submitted to laser irradiation. The depth profile of the transformed zone was studied in connection with metallographic and microhardness data. A nearly constant retained austenite fraction of about 8% persists down to 0.9 mm where cementite begins to appear.
