Cold-induced urticaria associated with type I cryoglobulinemia, successfully treated with rituximab

Cold-induced urticaria (ColdU) is a common form of chronic inducible urticaria. It is characterized by the development of wheals and, sometimes, angioedema upon skin exposure to cold air, liquids, or objects.1 Although considerable progress has been made over the last years in the understanding of the condition and its treatment, ColdU remains a challenging clinical problem. Patients often suffer from ColdU for years before they are diagnosed, and treatment requires a personalized approach. Similar to other forms of chronic urticaria, ColdU has a significant impact on quality of life.1 Here, we describe a case of severe and refractory ColdU associated with cryoglobulinemia and successfully treated with rituximab.
