Title

Advanced simulation and optimization techniques for composites

Abstract
Simulation and numerical analysis procedures are important methods in the design of composite and other microheterogeneous materials. By the use of numerical simulation in addition to experimental characterisation techniques, the experimental effort and the related expenses can be reduced significantly. Furthermore, the numerical simulation of the material behaviour on the microscopic level enables a deeper understanding of the underlying microstructural processes for effects observed on the macroscopic level. Finally, numerical simulation techniques enable the optimisation of the material using rigorous mathematical optimisation routines. Modern trends in the application of numerical simulation techniques include especially the consideration of thermal and other non-mechanical properties along with mechanical properties. Further, uncertainty effects are considered in addition to previous deterministic approaches. In the optimisation of materials, multi-objective approaches considering different objectives are developed.
