The description refers to a process and a device for the treatment of three-dimensional workpieces with a direct barrier discharge. According to the invention, the workpiece surface to be treated is arranged opposite an electrode which has an electrically isolating barrier on the workpiece side, whereby at least the side of the barrier facing the workpiece has a shape which emulates the workpiece surface to be treated. To produce such an electrode, a thermoplasitc material is used as an electrical insulating barrier, said material permitting the barrier to assume the shape of the workpiece.
