The first thermoplastic materials developed about 150 years ago were biobased. That means, they are made out of renewable carbon sources, especially biomass. After petrochemicals superseded them in the 20th century, the needs for saving fossil resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions initiated their renaissance. Today, there is a wide range of biobased plastic materials available. Some of these are biodegradable, but there are durable, reuseable, and recyclable types available, too.
