The use of user models can be very valuable when trying to develop accessible and ergonomic products and services taking into account users specific needs and preferences. Simulation of userproduct interaction using user models may reveal accessibility issues at the early stages of design and development, and this results to a significant reduction in costs and development time. Moreover, user models can be used in adaptive interfaces enabling the personalised customisation of user interfaces that enhances the accessibility and usability of products and services. This paper presents the efforts of the Virtual User Modelling and Simulation Standardisation VUMS cluster of projects towards the development of an interoperable user model, able to describe both able-bodied and people with various kinds of disabilities. The VUMS cluster is consisted by the VERITAS, MyUI, GUIDE, and VICON FP7 European projects, all involved in user modelling from different perspectives. The main goal of the VUMS cluster was the development of a unified user model that could be used by all the participant projects and that could be the basis of a new user model standard. Currently, within the VUMS cluster, a common user model has been defined and converters that enable the transformation from each projects specific user model to the VUMS user model and vice versa have been developed enabling, thus, the exchange of user models between the projects.

Applying web accessibility to internet portals
    ( 2004)

    Nordbrock, G.
Internet portals are becoming a very popular entry point to the Web. Users utilize them because of the big amount of information available to them. This paper aims to highlight the major hurdles disabled and/or older users encounter in Web portals, and to issue recommendations for their layout and structure based upon the results of a user requirements collection carried out by the authors. The findings pointed out that provision of a powerful search engine is essential for successful information retrieval. Moreover, due to the diversity and some times contradictory needs of the user groups under consideration, customization of information presentation plays an important role in ensuring accessibility and usability of Internet portals. The paper also includes a brief overview of the results in relation to the actual working draft of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0.

This paper presents an application called USERfit Tool, developed to facilitate the use of the USERfit design methodology that was developed in order to generate usability and accessibility specifications. Though USERfit methodology was developed mainly for the Assistive Technology environment it has been adapted to the design of applications for any group of users. The principal difficulty experienced in the application of USERfit has been that because the information generated was handled using paper forms then the inclusion or elimination of users, change of user contexts, and the need to propagate data from one form to other tended to make the USERfit application tedious. In order to decrease the effort required to manage the information produced in the design process - and so facilitate the use of USERfit methodology - USERfit Tool allows the reuse of previously generated designs, and the sharing of a design among remote designers, therefore maintaining coherence and compatibility.
