    In this paper, we examine challenges people face in situations of disrupted network infrastructures and how people use surviving portions of technology to cope with these challenges. We show how an important aspect in crises is the disturbance of services caused by disruptions in underlying technological structures. In such situations, people resort to all possible means to "reconstruct normality" in the sense of restoring their ability to communicate. For doing so, people often make creative use of the remains of the technological landscape. Building on the analysis of interviews with crises witnesses and first responders, external reports and scientific literature, we propose and describe three categories of mechanisms involving the creative use of surviving technology in crisis situations. We argue that studying these mechanisms can provide a key source of inspiration to define qualities of resilient architectures, and use these mechanisms as creative input to propose architectural qualities that can potentially make communication systems more resilient in the face of crises.

    This paper reports on the architectural development process implemented in the MICA (Multimodal Interaction in Context-Adaptive systems) project. The goal is to make a major step towards natural human interaction with multimodal systems and the provision of pro-active assistance: we aim to do this by combining explicit and implicit interaction on different modalities reflected in a new layer based architecture for multimodal interaction.

    This paper describes several approaches for tracking the mobile user of guiding systems. It illuminates different aspects for selecting the right technology, such as accuracy and costs, and illustrates the results of our projects using the specific technology. For three examples, i.e. optical tracking, infrared-based systems and WLAN-tracking, we describe our applications from the field of indoor and museum guides. Each of the application requires specific capabilities from the technology ranging from cost-efficiency to precise measurement of position and orientation. We will therefore describe the different (dis-)advantages and draw the conclusions for the application functionality.

    This paper introduces a framework for distributed user modelling in ubiquitous computing. Regarding the requirements in ubiquitous computing, communication details are not fixed per se or even unknown during the system specification phase. Hiding the technology within specialized components allows for unique migration of information between the components and releases system developers from considering specific properties and protocols. Supporting efficient development of applications, the distributed components are able to react both to their environment and to messages received from neighbouring components.
