Four- and eight-channel arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) and fixed optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) devices with channel spacing of 1200 and 600 GHz have been fabricated using super-high refractive index contrast (Delta n=0.020) triazine containing polymers. Accordingly, the size of the four-channel AWG was only 10x3 mm and the insertion loss was 3 dB.

Cross-linked polymeric materials are used in a wide range of applications. Special compositions are used in micro-system technologies and its utilization is extending to integrated optics. We have been working for several years in the field of polymers for optical applications. Highly fluorinated polycyanurate systems have been proven as promising waveguide materials in integrated optics. The refractive index can be adjusted reproducibly in a wide range almost continuously. The layer quality was optimized. Low optical losses of less than 0.3 dB/cm@1550nm were obtained and working optical prototypes were developed. The birefringence had been a major problem, but this was solved by adjusting the coefficient of thermal expansion of substrate and film. We will report in this paper on the polycyanurate ester resins and the new triazine containing polymeric systems.

Thermo-optic 1 * 2 vertical coupler switches (VCSs) using a hybrid polymer/silica integration technology were designed using a finite element method and a coupled mode method for different refractive index contrasts. The multilayer structures were optimized by thermal analysis. Based on these designs and simulations, hybrid polymer/silica thermooptic 1 * 2 VCSs exhibiting low insertion loss, low crosstalk, low switching power and polarisation independence were demonstrated. Based on this building block, a 1 * 8 VCS has been fabricated.

A modified hybrid polymer/silica 1x2 vertical coupler switch (VCS) with a polymer gap layer and a refractive index contrast of 0.008 has been designed, fabricated and characterised. The VCS exhibits low loss, low crosstalk, low switching power, and polarisation insensitivity. Using the 1x2 VCS as a building block, a 1x8 VCS matrix has been implemented.

An athermal arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer relying on an all-polymer approach is reported. The all-polymer AWG consisting of polymer waveguides fabricated on a polymer substrate exhibits excellent performance. By properly adjusting the coefficient of thermal expansion of the polymer substrate, athermal and polarisation-independent AWG devices featuring a wavelength shift of less than +or-0.05 nm in the 25-65 degrees C temperature range could be demonstrated.

A hybrid integration concept has been investigated which combines the advantages of ultra-low loss silica waveguides and low power consumption polymer thermo-optic switches. A 1*2 vertical coupler type switch (VCS) has been realised. Preliminary results exhibited a crosstalk of <-23 dB, an insertion loss of 3.5 dB (at 1550 nm) and a switching power of <80 mW.
