Towards a platform for supporting the buyer in trading in heterogeneous marketplaces

While the number of electronic marketplaces has increased on the Internet, tools to help buyers in participating in these marketplaces (heterogeneous marketplaces) are lacking. As part of the European Union funded eBroker project on electronic marketplaces, we attempt to address this problem by developing tools that help buyers in trading in these electronic marketplaces. This paper addresses the following issues: problems buyers face when trading in heterogeneous marketplaces, sources of problems, and how to solve them.

Transaction models supporting cooperative work

Cooperative work on shared information requires different kind of computing system support to coordinate the work of multiple users, to establish mutual awareness and to ensure consistency. These issues are currently tackled separately in various loosely related areas, like workflow systems, groupware, and advanced transactional models. We present a transactional model that provides a core functionality for information sharing in cooperative systems, that explicitely supports cooperation primitives and at the same time ensures consistency of results. The model has been derived from a thorough analysis of various cooperative appliciation scenarios. It is currently being implemented as an extension of an object-oriented database management system and evaluated for a cooperative document authoring application.

Goal-based execution of flexible workflows

In dieser Dissertation stellen wir einen Ansatz vor, der es erlaubt, Flexibilität und Kontrolle sowohl bei der Spezifikation als auch bei der Ausführung von Workflows miteinander zu verbinden. Existierende Ansätze im Workflow-Bereich waren entweder statisch oder haben sich darauf konzentriert, möglichst weitgehende Änderungen an der Struktur eines laufenden Workflows zu ermöglichen. Folglich existiert im ersten Fall keinerlei Flexibilität. Im zweiten Fall verliert der Workflow-Designer die Kontrolle darüber, ob der Workflow zur Laufzeit wie von ihm beabsichtigt ausgeführt wird. Im Gegensatz zu diesen beiden Extremen zeigen wir in unserem Ansatz, wie Flexibilität bei der Spezifikation eines Workflows in kontrollierter Form ermöglicht werden kann. Darüber hinaus zeigen wir, wie die so entstehenden Freiheitsgrade zur Laufzeit genutzt werden können, um die Ausführung des Workflows gemäß den Zielen des zugrundeliegenden Geschäftsprozesses zu optimieren. Dieser Ansatz besteht aus zwei Teilen, nämlich einem Teil zur Modellierung und einem Teil zur Ausführung von Workflows. In bezug auf die Modellierung stellen wir Techniken bereit, mit denen sowohl spezifiziert werden kann, welche Art von Flexibilität in welchem Teil eines Workflows zulässig ist, als auch an welchen Zielen sich die Workflow-Ausführung orientieren soll. Im Hinblick auf die Workflow-Ausführung geben wir Algorithmen an, mit denen wir bestimmen, wie zur Laufzeit in optimierter Form von der Flexibilität Gebrauch gemacht werden kann.
