    Proceeding from the assumption that in the future an intensified re-engineering of business processes in the area of product development will be necessary, the development of powerful tools in this area appropriate. An approach is presented providing the support for the restructuring and optimization of business processes surpassing the functional scope of commercially available tools. The approach sets the further goal of imploying the business models generated to perform a multi-criteria process optimization as well. This optimization is to be performed in an automated fashion under end-user control based on a process-related system of key-figures.

    Within the scope of an industrial project of a German car manufacturer, a new-type planning tool was implemented as a prototype. The system assists the restructurization and optimization of business processes in product development. An eminent feature of this software is apart from the modeling of business processes, its optimization driven by characteristic numbers.

    Urgent decisions on investments to be made to strengthen competitiveness are taken sluggishly in the production development area because no adequate methods for analysing and evaluating new development strategies and corresponding informatic concepts are available in the process of product development. Simulation technique has proved successful on many sectors as a tool to analyse complex dynamic systems, so that decisive findings may also be expected from the application of this methodology in the process of production development.

    Dringende Investitionsentscheidungen zur Stärkung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit werden im Produktentwicklungsbereich nur schleppend getroffen, weil keine geeigneten Methoden zur Analyse und Bewertung neuer Entwicklungsstrategien und entsprechender informationtechnischer Konzepte im Produktentwicklungsprozeß zur Verfügung stehen. Simulationstechnik als Analysewerkzeug komplexen dynamischer Systeme in Verbindung mit einem Planungssysten zur Bewertung und Optimierung von Ablaufstrukturen wird als ein effizientes Planungskonzept für das Reengineering von Produktentwicklungsprozessen vorgestellt.

    New strategies and requirements for product development imply the equivalent treatment of modelling tasks for product and process. In the present article an approach is described which aims on the flexible adaptation of the product development with respect to product and process specific constraints. This is achieved by the combination of an approach for planning and optimisation of product development, a semantic feature approach which enables the individual integration of system components and a method for quality management accompanying the product development.

    Not only the current economic recession forces many companies to improve their competitive power. Innovative conceptions in the domain of product development, which consider the aspects of time, quality and costs can make an important contribution to that. There are two potentials, the information technology and the organization, which can be used by a company, to transform the aims of these innovative conceptions. Because of their interdependence both potentials have to be seen in connection and not isolated from each other. New methods of organization as Lean Management, Simultaneous Engineering and Project Management require the introduction of decentralized enterprise units, of teamwork in design and of time driven decision making. The increasing quantity and complexitivity of information are demanding solutions of the information technology. First of all the introduction of an openn system architecture is necessary to obtain the flexibility of information processing. Other importa nt applications of information technology is the field of knowledge-based methods, of simulation, the modelling of product and feature processing.
