A practical approach to reduce energy consumption in a serial production environment by shutting down subsystems of a machine tool

2019 , Can, Alperen , Thiele, Gregor , Krüger, Jörg , Fisch, J. , Klemm, C.

Energy efficiency in production is becoming increasingly important for the automotive industry, motivated by political regulations and competitiveness. Many theoretical approaches to achieve an efficient production via advanced control have only been tested in experimental environments. Important for the transfer into serial production is the proof that all requirements (e.g. quantity and quality) will be met. For ensuring production on demand, machine tools (MT) imitate the real production process to keep themselves at operating temperature. All subsystems of a MT operate at full power in this state, disregarding its necessity. Shutting down these subsystems during non-productive periods is a promising approach for saving energy. This paper will present a method for shutting down components during non-productive periods, while ensuring the ability to produce on demand. Successful tests were already performed during live operation in a plant of a car manufacturer in Berlin, Germany.

Steuerungsintegration von Überwachungsverfahren

1995 , Spur, G. , Krüger, J. , Suwalski, I.

Integration of monitoring procedures into the CNC. The mounting demands made on the performance of modern machine tools require an ever growing amount of functionality to be included into the machine's environment. Here, monitoring of the machining process plays a vital part. This article discusses the criteria for integrating machine monitoring systems into the CNC and describes the resulting demands on the monitoring system and on open controls.

Werkstückorientierte Entwicklung von Werkzeugmaschinen

1994 , Spur, G. , Stelzer, C. , Sanft, C.

The design of machine-tools which have been optimized for the process in question not only requires the recognition of technological trends. It is just as important to make forecasts on the properties of parts to be produced in the future in order to design production systems accordingly. The present article introduces results from forecasts intended to support a part-related development of machine-tool concepts.

Design- and control-concept for compliant machine tools based on controller integrated models

2012 , Uhlmann, E. , Eßmann, J. , Wintering, J.-H.

The paper presents a novel design- and control-concept for machine tools aiming for lightweight design. A Kalman-filter containing a model of the mechanical structure is applied. The Kalman-filter calculates the dynamic dislocation of the machine tool body with respect to the tool-center-point and its velocity. Dislocation and velocity are used for the correction of the CNC's setpoint values. Experimental results show, that the dynamic dislocation had been reduced considerably. This allows for a compliant design contrary to the established design-concept of stiff frames. The concept is proposed for direct-drive machine tools used for micro-milling.

Diagnose fettgeschmierter Hauptspindellager

1994 , Feil, A.

1993 , Spur, G. , Kranz, A.

A changing temperature causes undesirable geometrical deformation of machine components. This article shows a design-oriented method to influence the thermal behaviour of machines. Using isolating material enables to direct the flow of heat. The results of an experiment, conducted on a machine tool spindle with a liner of zirconium oxide, illustrate the effects of thermal isolation.

Genauigkeit koordinierter Bahnbewegungen

1995 , Spur, G. , Feil, A. , Schröer, K.

Precision of coordinated path movements. Apart from motions which a machine element describes only translationally or rotationally, mainly those movements are of interest for mechanical engineering, specifically for handling and robot technology, which occur by an overlaying of elementary forms of movement. The time-related and geometrical deviations of actual from ideal movements along a path call for a systematic description. This article provides an overview of definitions of movement deviations and of the state of standardization.

Diagnosis of grease lubricated main spindle bearings

1994 , Spur, G. , Feil, A.

The spindle bearing system is a very critical component with regard to the unexpected failure of a machine tool. While the innfluence of many different operation conditions makes a reliable prediction of the life expectancy of spindle-bearings impossible, after an occured failure a long space of time will be needed for repair. A newly developed diagnosis system detects several critical states at the same time. The procedure serves for the determination of over-lubrication and under-lubrication, ageing of lubricant, pollution of lubricant by coolant or water as well as damage to the race surfaces due to abrasive wear or fatigue. Measuring the temperature at the outer bearing ring while the spindle is accelerating during a test-run is a suitable method for determine changes in the lubrication.
