The Digital Twin for Operations, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul

2023 , Lünnemann, Pascal , Fresemann, Carina , Richter, Friederike

Looking at digital twins in terms of their information sets (master and shadow models), a significant part of the shadow models is created in the context of product life. Digital twins must be designed accordingly, focusing on their dedicated added value or business model. This concerns not only the information and data models, but also the communication technologies, processing routes and interaction mechanisms used. With appropriately designed digital twins, product life becomes a source of knowledge for optimizing or tracking product systems. MRO processes play a special role in this. Here, the digital twin becomes a monitoring system, information source, process manager or information sink through suitable functions and thus a potential knowledge repository.

MRO - challenge and chance for sustainable enterprises

2013 , Uhlmann, Eckart , Bilz, Martin , Baumgarten, Jeanette

Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) is acquiring increasing commercial and socio-economic significance. For products and goods with high investment costs and a long lifespan, especially in the sectors of energy and transport, a considerable portion of commercial profits are generated by after-sales services. The field has a limited scientific background, despite a high potential in the business sector for technological and scientific optimization. This is also shown in the Market and Trend Study: Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul conducted by the Fraunhofer IPK in 2011. This study provides number-based and significant information about the market size, the competitive situation and future trends. This is where the Fraunhofer innovation cluster MRO in Energy and Transport were applied. Technologies and solutions for the optimization of MRO processes were developed in four different fields of innovation.

Applicability of industrial robots for machining and repair processes

2013 , Uhlmann, Eckart , Heitmüller, Florian , Manthei, Marcel , Reinkober, Sascha

Defect high value components with a long life-time such as turbine blades and vanes are usually not disposed but rather repaired. Due to the lot size of 1, most of the work is done manually. With the aim of (semi-) automating the repair processes an adaptive grinding process for re-contouring of turbine blades has been developed. Industrial robots are used to provide a flexible machine system for all necessary repair process steps.

PLM-based service data management in steam turbine business

2012 , Müller, Patrick , Muschiol, Michael , Stark, Reiner

This paper introduces a concept applied for a new PLM-supported process in steam turbine service business. The concept has been developed and instantiated in an industrial case: The paper starts with an analysis of engineering processes and the IT landscape in a globally acting company offering MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) services for steam turbines. Illustrations show how digital product and service data is generated, edited, enriched, and managed throughout the lifecycle of a steam turbine. In order to enhance the already PLM-supported service process the concept for the new PLM process was defined within the company. The concept implements one single PDM system with interfaces to one dedicated ERP system. Illustrations of the new PLM process show how to manage product and ser vice documentation generated throughout the steam turbine lifecycle. The paper provides first-hand experiences made in a PLM migration project, which implemented the new PLM process.

Design of experiments for laser metal deposition in maintenance, repair and overhaul applications

2013 , Graf, Benjamin , Ammer, Stefan , Gumenyuk, Andrey , Rethmeier, Michael

Modern and expensive parts lead to an increasing demand for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) technologies. Instead of part replacement, MRO technologies are economically advantageous throughout the life cycle. Laser metal deposition as modern MRO technology can be used to repair cracks or protect damaged surfaces with a hard facing layer. It is necessary to adjust weld bead profile to the specific task. For this purpose, Design of Experiment (DoE) has a high potential to decrease experimental effort. In this paper, a full factorial design is used to determine the effect of process parameters on the geometric dimensions of the weld bead. The paper is of interest to engineers working with laser metal deposition as well as DoE methods.
