Integration of monitoring procedures into the CNC. The mounting demands made on the performance of modern machine tools require an ever growing amount of functionality to be included into the machine's environment. Here, monitoring of the machining process plays a vital part. This article discusses the criteria for integrating machine monitoring systems into the CNC and describes the resulting demands on the monitoring system and on open controls.

The design of machine-tools which have been optimized for the process in question not only requires the recognition of technological trends. It is just as important to make forecasts on the properties of parts to be produced in the future in order to design production systems accordingly. The present article introduces results from forecasts intended to support a part-related development of machine-tool concepts.

A changing temperature causes undesirable geometrical deformation of machine components. This article shows a design-oriented method to influence the thermal behaviour of machines. Using isolating material enables to direct the flow of heat. The results of an experiment, conducted on a machine tool spindle with a liner of zirconium oxide, illustrate the effects of thermal isolation.

Part 1: Structure of the catalogue and spindle-bearing system. The present state of research in the field of thermal behaviour of machine tools has been documented by the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the Technical University Aachen, the Research Centre for Machine Tools Chemnitz and the Institute for Machine Tools and Manufacturing Technology (IWF) of the Technical University Berlin. Measures for improving the machine tool design were documented in a catalogue, which consists of the parts basics, spindle-bearing system, frame components, drive system, measuring systems, and compensation. These parts will be introduced by the participants in three articles in this magazine. In the following article the structure of the catalogue and the spindle-bearing system are discussed.

A newly developed diagnosis system detects several critical states at the same time (1). Te procedure serves for the determination of over-lubrication and under-lubrication, ageing of lubricant, pollution of lubricant by coolant or water, damage to the race surfaces due to abrasive wear or fatigue as well as overload. The experiments discussed in this article show, among other things, that the measuring of the temperature at the outer bearing ring is a suitable method for determine changes in the lubrication.

Electric motors are nowadays used as driving motors to produce the main and the feed movements of machine tools almost withour exception. As there have been great advances in the electrical power control and the signal processing a multiple number of motors exists on the market to realize the required movements. The article describes different kinds of electric motors and their specific application to machine tools. Moreover, the whole driving system including the elements motor, power control unit, position and speed gauging system and control circuit has to be inspected.
