Sustainable manufacturing as a factor of innovative production processes

2008 , Uhlmann, E. , König, J.

The challenge of a modern society is to assure a permanent economical impact in terms of goods and services. It attends to rising demands of the market for high quality, reliable and reasonably priced products and short cycle times. Therefore, the entire production process is characterized by ongoing innovations and reorganizations. The aim of modern industrial production processes is to provide products with a higher added value in a shorter time-to-market. This is ensured by technological innovations in all parts of manufacturing. Moreover, the whole life cycle of products is accompanied by customer related service provisions. Commencing with time and cost reducing product design and development, up to the recycling in the end of the product life cycle, the implementation of new production processes increases. The paper presents new developments and applications in case of product design, machining strategies, finish operations and recycling technologies. Entnommen aus TEMA

Charakterisierung geometrisch bestimmter Schneiden

CVD diamond coatings on geometrically complex cutting tools

2009 , Uhlmann, E. , König, J.

The manufacturing of CVD (chemical vapour deposition) diamond coated shaft type cutting tools is demanding due to the complex design of the cutting edges and the cobalt content of the cemented carbide. The influencing parameters of substrate, pre-treatment and diamond film on the tool cutting performance are discussed. The optimised manufacturing route of CVD diamond coated thread milling drills is identified with the use of material and tribological tests. Following the optimised production of the tools, the thread milling drills are then applied in the machining of AlSi17Cu4Mg, whereby the tool performance is characterised with respect to their wear behaviour, the process forces and temperatures as well as the workpiece quality.

Key technologies for sustainable production

2008 , Uhlmann, E. , Krüger, J. , Hühns, T. , Hübert, C. , König, J. , Hollan, R. , Oberschmidt, D. , Byrne, F. , Neumann, C. , Duchstein, B. , Marcks, P.

Germany is a world-wide leader in machine and plant construction. In order to maintain this position in a sustainable manner, producers of machines and plants must find solutions to satisfy the rising customer requirements. These requirements include maximum process security, minimal machine down times, rapid fault repair, optimal use of wear components and the ability to plan maintenance procedures. In order to keep the competitiveness, innovative production engineering needs to be in a position to use human and material resources in an efficient manner in order to secure production centres. The continuously shortening life-cycles of products is in conflict with the need to increase the useful life of production systems. Flexible, adaptable, reconfigurable and self-organising equipment are the keys to solving this conflict. People, with their specific technological knowledge, must therefore be integrated into a newly defined role within the production process. The present gives an overview to the current developments in the research fields of production engineering (hybrid processes, simulation of machining operations, modular design and optimisation of machine tools) and related strategies for a ressource-efficient human-orientated automatisation.
