Strategic planning of information technological infrastructures for life cycle management
    ( 1998)

    Kind, C.
In parallel with the increase of the importance of life cycle management aspects the appropriate supply of information according to specific requirements within all life cycle phases becomes more important. By this, an information management system is needed which has to be based on an appropriate information technological infrastructure to secure the information flows between life cycle phases distributed in place and time. Within this contribution a reference model of such information technological infrastructures will be presented, which contains the most important elements to fulfil the complex tasks and can be used to derive specific infrastructures. Based on this reference model a simulation system is described which has the task to model and optimise information technological infrastructures.

Urgent decisions on investments to be made to strengthen competitiveness are taken sluggishly in the production development area because no adequate methods for analysing and evaluating new development strategies and corresponding informatic concepts are available in the process of product development. Simulation technique has proved successful on many sectors as a tool to analyse complex dynamic systems, so that decisive findings may also be expected from the application of this methodology in the process of production development.

Programming system for profile grinders. Today, profile grinders permit the production of complex workpiece geometries by using profile grinding wheels. Stationary or privatable dressing tools are used for producing the workpiece geometry on the grinding wheel; this geometry is then reproduced on the workpiece. Suitable programming systems have to make available a number of customized functions which take into account the technological marginal conditions of profiling.

Simulation systems are gaining an increasing influence. While different solutions are still being used on the way from the idea of a product to the production plant, comprehensive modelling will become feasible in the future.

3D-simulation system for boring and milling. Increasing model variety and reduced product lives call nowadays for production system enabling smaller and smaller batches to be cost-effectively manufactured with high productivity and quality. This is only possible by flexibly automating the production process. An important aspect in this context is the shortening of the setting-up time. High cutting and feed rates as well as sealing off the work area in the case of numerically-controlled machine tools make it more difficult for machine operators to visually monitor the machining cycles. For this reason the verification of newly prepared NC programs directly at the machine-tool takes up considerable time and can lead to damage to the machine. The selective application of 3D-simulation system in boring and milling work allows setting-up times to be minimized. The authors describe a dynamic simulation system for boring and milling at the Institute for Production Plant and Design Technology (IPK), Berlin.

Simulation systems and the design of machine tools. The application of 3D CAD and simulation systems for designing machine tosls permits an overall view of the concept and a better qualitative evaluation. Especially the integration into structures of the production shop can thus be improved, as three-dimensional presentation is a very effective means of investigating spatial problems. Moreover, investigating the time response for the first time offers the possibility of evaluating on a quantitativebasis the criterion of quantitative output in the design phase. Comparing alternative solutions therefore now is possible on a measurable and reproducible scale.

In a first part design is situated as an activity which integrates four domains: the customer's domain, the fuctional one, the product and the process domains. Two phases are distinguished: the creative and the analytic one. Successively following aspects are dicussed: Geometric Modelling, Inferfacing Product Modelling, Features, Simulation and System Architecture.
