Assistenzsystem für die Entwicklung nachhaltiger Produkte
    (Fraunhofer Verlag, 2020)
    Buchert, Tom

The development of sustainable and resource-efficient products requires consideration of multiple design targets concerning the whole product life cycle. Taking these factors into account leads to complex decision situations with conflicting targets and trade-offs. To support design engineers in these situations an Engineering Decision Support System (EDSS) has been developed. In this article, the overall concept of the EDSS is presented. Furthermore, one function of the EDSS to assist a systematic comparison of product variants is introduced in detail. It is based on combining an existing PLM solutions (in particular Siemens Teamcenter 11/Siemens NX9) and software for Life Cycle Assessment (GaBi 7). Beyond a proof of concept for information exchange between both systems a methodology is presented which enables design engineers to systematically assess and select multiple product variants based on their resource utilization. The approach is complemented with a comprehensive case study for different design options of a core slide. In the scope of this study, variations of geometry (solid vs. hollow design), materials (hot-working steel vs. nickel-based superalloy) and manufacturing processes (laser metal deposition vs. milling) were considered. Furthermore, a usability study of the decision support tool is shown.

A large number of methods have been developed in order to systematically consider sustainability as a design criterion in the product development process. However, further support is required to help product development teams to assess the applicability of the existing methods in the specific design contexts. In order to address this problem, the Design Decision Support Assistant (DDSA)-an IT-based assistance system-has been developed to support product development teams in the selection, scheduling, and application of sustainable product design methods in the product development process. The backbone of the assistant is a method repository comprising 29 methods for sustainable product development as well as a method taxonomy to enable the selection and scheduling of suitable methods for achieving sustainability-related design targets. This article introduces the concept of the DDSA, details its practical prototypical implementation, and illustrates its application in a case study.

To develop a business model oriented to sustainability, sustainability aspects should already be taken into account at the planning stages, when strategies, ideas, opportunities and concepts are identified and created. However, there is a lack of methods to assist the creation of sustainable business models. To cope with this challenge, a method named Configurator of product-service system (PSS) proposals was developed in order to support companies to create business models for selling functionality instead of product property. Through the application of this method together with the scenario planning technique, a product concept was transformed into a product-service system business model. For this purpose, the multifunctional team responsible for the creation of this concept utilized the method to develop a business model for Pedelec (pedal electric cycle) inserted in a sharing system and taking into account the future development of the city of Berlin.

A multitude of information is required to address sustainability aspects in product design decisions. However, information required for applying methods in the field of sustainable product development often overlaps. Moreover, specific improvement measures can primarily be identified if method results can be traced back to data origin. This paper presents a concept and implementation of an information platform which is integrated into a PLM system and integrates an ontology based knowledge model and a semantic wiki. The information platform shall avoid double work, improve documentation of information and assist in understanding the data basis of method results. This paper discusses requirements and solution elements and presents findings from applying the methods Lifecycle Design Strategies (LiDS) Wheel and the Product Sustainability Index.
