It was the object of the first phase of the project to obtain a summary of the present knowledge about the emission sources and a first rough estimation about the emissions, the identification of the need for research and - as far as possible - the discussion of the possiblities to reduce emissions. The following fields were examined: waste water cleaning, surface and ground water, mining of coal and oil, distribution of gaseous fuels, combustion of fossil fuels in stationary plants and vehicles, industrial production processes, landfills, combustion of biomass and composting, agriculture and stock-farming.
