There are methods like X-ray testing of particle testing where the test results are images. Other methods like eddy-current testing or ultrasonic testing can give images when a test object is scanned moving a probe across its surface. Image processing is used for the operation and storage of test results and for the estraction of informations from images. The later is important for automated testing procedures.
