Impact-Based Project Ideas for Sustainable Planning Strategies in Piura, Perú
Title Supplement
Conversion of Small Illegal Dumpsites as an Opportunity to Accelerate Urban Transformation Towards Climate Action
Abstract
Climate change has significant implications for urban ecosystems, impacting essential infrastructure and sectors like housing, energy, and water supply. Cities contribute over 60% of greenhouse gas emissions, with urban waste accounting for 3-5% of them. Thus, improving waste management and reducing waste generation could decrease urban emissions by 15-20%. This research highlights the MGI Morgenstadt Global Smart Cities Initiative and its pilot project in Piura, Peru. The project aims to transform a small illegal dumpsite into a recycling space, improving the urban environment. The research explores the intervention’s contribution to social, environmental, and economic indicators of the city’s waste collection system. Standard Indicators of the International Climate Initiative and EU Smart City frameworks validate project action components, fostering a holistic approach benefiting the planet, people, governance, prosperity, and propagation. Project indicators are calculated post-implementation, considering each component’s contribution. The project addresses these areas by cleaning, transforming, and consolidating them into new public spaces. Data-based information aids decision-makers in enhancing development and evaluation strategies to mitigate negative impacts. It promotes sustainable waste management, encourages emissions reduction, efficient resource use, environmental protection, job creation, and community environmental awareness. Overall, it contributes to a sustainable future by addressing waste issues and fostering environmentally conscious cities.
