Title
Deliverable: 3.7 Report on the Outcome of the Testing and Demonstration
Abstract
The BungEES project conducted pilot demonstrations in four countries – Portugal, Spain, France, and the Czech Republic to evaluate how demand response and energy flexibility solutions can enhance energy efficiency, grid stability, and support EU energy policy goals. Each pilot targeted different contexts – a university campus building in Portugal, residential homes in Spain and France, and electrically heated households in the Czech Republic, France and Portugal – to test the orchestration of smart energy technologies (heat pumps, smart thermostats/meters, electric vehicle chargers, battery storage) under real-world conditions. The pilots’ outcomes provide valuable insights into technical performance, user acceptance, and the potential for scaling flexibility services across Europe. These findings are especially relevant to EU initiatives like the REPowerEU strategy (which emphasizes heat pump deployment and reduced gas reliance) and the push for digitalization of energy systems, as they demonstrate how digital smart-grid solutions can unlock demand-side flexibility to stabilize the grid and accelerate decarbonization. Across all four countries, the BungEES pilots highlight that actively managed demand response can yield significant energy savings, peak load reduction, and new value streams – contributing to a more resilient and sustainable European energy system.
