An emerging market? The European Maritime Industry’s View on Autonomous Maritime Systems: A Survey

Autonomous Maritime Systems have significantly emerged in maritime research over the past decade. But how is this technology adapted by the maritime industry in business applications? Based on a product and application-focused literature review as well as an industrial survey among 52 companies, this paper gives insights into the industrial’s interest in this emerging technology for different maritime segments, their prioritized use cases as well as the main barriers for the emerging market according to the European Maritime Industry. Hereby, it assesses the technology adoption rate specifically for different segments, i.e. Ship Operators, Manufacturers, Ports, Shipbuilding, Offshore and (Hinterland) logistics.
