Title

Bioartificial gut—current state of small intestinal tissue engineering

Abstract
This chapter describes state-of-the-art of small intestinal tissue engineering. It starts with an introduction to architecture and function of the small intestine. It further provides an overview of current tissue engineering approaches such as organoid culture or Transwell-based cell models. It ends with an outlook on the future of small intestinal tissue engineering including methodological and technical challenges that need to be overcome to improve current concepts and to translate them into practical application.
