Title

The Industrial Internet of Things

Abstract
Summary The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is the application of emerging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies within industrial domains to further enhance productivity. This worldwide paradigm shift, the digital transformation, can be observed across the entire value chain and spans multiple verticals, such as energy, health care, manufacturing, smart cities, and transportation. Each domain developed highly optimized silos in the past, based on Operational Technology (OT), and will be interconnected with others using Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This chapter provides an overview of current concepts to bring the OT and the ICT worlds together. More specifically, a number of challenges and technologies in this context are described and relevant initiatives are presented. Finally, the outstanding field of application "Industry 4.0" is being highlighted in more detail.
