Standardization of Smart City Sensor Networks

Title Supplement
Use-case-specificity and data formats as key aspects
Abstract
As smart city evolves rapidly, standardization is increasingly recognized as a technical, political, and strategic tool for fostering long-term resilience and innovation. In-situ sensors capture a variety of data that is crucial for urban governance and data-driven decision-making. This study examines the necessity, form, and challenges of standardizing sensors within the context of smart city development. Using a qualitative methodology that incorporates literature reviews and guided interviews, the research aims to understand the current situation and the perspectives of municipalities and sensor manufacturers, while identifying areas of common ground. The results demonstrate a growing need for standardization to ensure interoperability and optimize the use of sensor technologies. Furthermore, it is revealed that many municipalities are reluctant to implement new smart city use cases due to needed expertise and personnel, even with technical standards in place. Standardization could contribute to the further establishment of smart cities in general and IoT-sensors in particular.
