OpenLanes: network emulation system for mega-constellation networks

Abstract
The deployment of mega-constellations with inter-satellite links has made space networking environments extremely complex, due to the significant number of potential paths and the regular topology changes. Each shift in the network topology necessitates a reassessment and adjustment of routing on the satellites. Because of this complexity, a rigorous testing process is demanded to evaluate network capabilities and mechanisms before they are deployed. To address this challenge, we developed OpenLanes, a comprehensive network emulation toolkit designed to assess satellite systems' networking capabilities. OpenLanes emulates network links across a large number of virtual nodes, providing a realistic environment for evaluating solutions in multi-layer satellite mega-constellation networking conditions. Additionally, it can integrate with external payload hardware, allowing for the evaluation of network components and their functionality in a controlled environment. Our versatile toolkit can also emulate various network types, including terrestrial, non-terrestrial, and hybrid networks. By using OpenLanes, we can ensure robust assessments and minimize the risk of unexpected, side-effects issues during in-orbit deployment.
