Title

Flexibilities in a sector coupled, net-zero energy system

Title Supplement
Presentation held at European Climate and Energy Modelling Platform, ECEMP 2023, online, Belgium, October 5-6, 2023
Abstract
Increasing shares of fluctuating renewable energy sources wind and solar in net-zero energy systems increase the demand of flexible technologies. This paper investigates the contribution of different flexible technologies in a netzero energy system, using the sector coupled energy system model REMod and conducting a correlation analysis on the resulting time series. We find that in times of electricity shortage, discharging power storages, operation of flexible power plants and electricity imports play a crucial role, while in times of excess electricity power-to-x technologies are dominant, accompanied by power-toheat, charging power storages and curtailment. Short term power storages are mostly correlated with solar, power-to-x plants with wind production and operation of flexible powert plants in times of electricity shortage is driven by non-flexible demand.
