Design and Layout of a Sub-Harmonic Quadrature Injection-Locked Oscillator (SH-QILO) for the 60GHz WiGig Frequency Band in Global Foundries 22nm FDX Technology
Abstract
Global Foundries 22nm fully-depleted silicon on insulator technologies enables advanced system design approaches for digital, analog and RF/mm-wave circuits. While digital systems benefit from the decreasing transistor size leading to decreasing chip space, the RF and mm-wave designs require almost the same amount of chip space. Since every novel transistor technology lead to an increase of fabrication cost, the size of the RF and mm-wave designs have to be reduced to save cost. In order to reduce the chip size of a voltage-controlled oscillator, the sub-harmonic injection-locked oscillator approach will be applied, which uses an reference frequency in the lower GHz-range, that can be provided externally, without degrading performance.
