Title
Modelling and coupling multi-energy systems for supplying methane to transportation sector in Germany
Abstract
The MethQuest research project is about creating new processes for generating renewable gas fuels and progressing existing technologies. At the same time, the project investigates appropriate optimization concepts for motors and engines in cars, ships and electric power generation systems. In addition, MethQuest aims to develop solutions for linking infrastructure for electricity, gas and heat and researches the possible effects and benefits the large-scale introduction of renewable gas might have in the energy sector in Germany. The project is divided into several individual projects in order to deal with the large topic area in a targeted manner. The project MethSys is developing a whole-area simulation for Germany covering the supply of renewable energy methane and the entire logistics chain from generation, transport and storage through to end-users. The group is likewise creating a comprehensive concept illustrating how the operation of Power-to-Gas (P2G) plants can best be controlled across the entire energy system to ensure an optimum grid operation. The paper describes the models and methodology used for evaluating technically electric distribution grid and assessing regional infrastructure requirements for integrating P2G that allow supplying the transportation sector under different market development scenarios.
