Components of conventional water infrastructure systems have very long useful lives, in some cases more than 80 years. But important framework conditions will change in the next decades: demographic change will reduce the number of users, climate change leads to changes in quantities of precipitation and in rainfall distribution and new ecological requirements are expected e.g. to improve the resources and energy efficiency.
